Stuart Sorkin’s practice is transactional in nature, including taxation, estate and personal financial planning, real estate, mergers, sales and acquisition of businesses and general business law.  Mr. Sorkin's clients includes small to mid-size domestic and international corporations, partnerships and individual entrepreneurs.  He advises his clients in such matters as choice and formation of business entity, raising of capital and financing, acquisition and development of real estate, employee incentive compensation, federal and state income tax consequences of transactions, retirement planning, purchase and sales of businesses, exit strategies, and all the routine and extraordinary matters of general business law.  Mr. Sorkin also assists his clients with all forms of wealth transfer alternatives, estate planning and asset protection, including, wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, family limited partnerships, charitable gifting and corporate succession and perpetuation plans. He assists clients with all forms of dealings with the IRS from advance rulings, preparation of tax filings, audit examinations and collection matters.  Mr. Sorkin serves as corporate counsel to several small and mid-size corporations. Aside from his own clients, Stuart H. Sorkin, P.C. is the Managing Member of The Business and Legal Advisors, LLC, a company that specializes in business and financial planning for small and mid-size businesses and their owners.

Mr. Sorkin is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia. Mr. Sorkin is also a Certified Public Accountant and has a Master’s of Laws in Taxation from Georgetown University.  He spent seven years working for two national accounting firms before beginning his law practice. In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Sorkin has developed and owns several residential real estate projects in the Washington Metropolitan Area and Chicago.  This varied background allows Mr. Sorkin to advise his clients from a businessman’s prospective rather than just a legal or tax accounting prospective. 

Mr. Sorkin is also the co-author with Dick Stieglitz of “Expensive Mistakes When Buying and Selling Companies … and How to avoid them in Your Deal”.  He is a frequent lecturer on exit strategies, estate planning and asset protection to various professional and small business organizations and associations.  Mr. Sorkin has been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, USA Today, Money Magazine and on various aspects of federal taxation.  Mr. Sorkin has been named to National Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals 2005-2006 and 2008-2009 and Madison’s Who’s Who 2008 -2011.  While Mr. Sorkin was with these national accounting firms, he was a frequent lecturer at firm sponsored courses on personal financial planning and federal taxation. Mr. Sorkin donates substantial time to several non-profit organizations, including; the Jack Anderson Foundation, the D.C. Chapter of Advisors in Philanthropy, Washington Waldorf School, and the Greater Washington Boys & Girls Clubs.
